Company offers solar discounts as an employee benefit

One recent example of the growing popularity of solar energy comes from California, where Aerojet is offering employees discounts on photovoltaic systems as part of their benefit package.

According to an announcement from the company, the employees will receive a discount on home energy systems produced by Yes! Solar Solutions that will reduce the total cost of the systems by up to 60 percent. About 1,600 employees will be eligible for the benefit.

Aerojet reported that it is making its own investment in solar energy by developing a 3.5 megawatt system that is expected to offset about 4,200 tons of carbon emissions, as well as other forms of air pollution. In one year, this is said to be equivalent to planting about 976,000 trees or removing over 8 million cars from the road.

"By providing our Sacramento employees with access to discounted solar systems for their homes, we are extending to them our company’s commitment to solar energy solutions, while also providing them with a deeply discounted hedge against rising electricity costs. This program is a win-win for all involved," said Aerojet president Scott Neish.

In the same announcement, Steve Kircher, CEO of Solar Power Inc., said that this appears to be the only employee benefit program of its kind in the U.S.
