Costco now selling do-it-yourself solar power systems

Consumers who are interested in the benefits of installing a solar power generation system at their home but don't want to deal with the hassle of finding and hiring a crew of professionals to do so now have a new option.

As a result of a new deal with a company called Grape Solar, Costco wholesale stores will now begin offering customers solar power systems that they can install themselves. The partnership will first begin with test offerings at locations in Arizona, California, Delaware, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington and Puerto Rico.

"For the first time, a leading retailer with numerous locations, quality recognition and tens of millions of loyal customers has made it possible for end users to buy high-quality solar products at great prices and have the products delivered directly to their homes in a matter of days," said Ocean Yuan, president of Grape Solar.

The kits will be small, ranging in size from 880 watts to more than 5 kilowatts, the report said. They also come with a 25-year warranty on power output and a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship.

These systems may be popular because consumers are becoming more interested in saving money on their energy bills.
