Worldwide energy sharing may be closer than once thought

It is possible for the whole world to share renewable energy? Eicke Weber, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, certainly believes it can be done. He told Solar Industry Magazine, he envisions a worldwide, interconnected energy system only powered by renewable energy, exclusively solar energy.

“The sun shines at some part of the day on some part of the world,” Weber told Solar Industry .

A microcosm of Weber’s vision, DESERTEC, is currently in its infancy stages. The energy-transport system is thought to use a super grid of high-voltage direct-current cables to transfer renewable through North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, according to Solar Industry.

Weber told the magazine people will need to think outside the box to achieve worldwide sharing of renewable energy. He also sees his plan as a way to get countries like Germany to stop using nuclear energy, which he believes is not fully controllable.

Nuclear energy is extremely dangerous to store due to the possibility of a nuclear explosion. Some of the world’s worst catastrophes have stemmed from the radiation that nuclear energy causes.

A steady decrease in the cost of manufacturing photovoltaic systems makes solar energy even more attractive. Because of this, solar energy will shortly be more cost-effective, and much more safe than nuclear energy.
